Like many towns in Vermont, Stratton goes back to the 1700's and the New Hampshire grants when, in 1761, Governor Benning Wentworth chartered thirty-six square miles to Isaac Searl and and sixty-two others. It proved difficult to settle as disputes led to several changes in ownership before the first settlers even arrived. When they did, they faced a hard life and the arduous tasks of clearing land, planting wheat, and cutting wood twenty years after the grant. Two hundred years after being chartered (in December of 1962) the Stratton Mountain Ski Resort opened.

Stratton Vermont mapThis web site is not affiliated with Stratton Mountain Ski Resort and represents the larger south central Vermont area including Stratton, Bromley Mountain, and the Battenkill Valley. Stratton, in Windham county, is the highest peak in this region. Bromley Mountain, in the town of Peru in Bennington county is nearby, as are the historic and picturesque towns of Manchester and Dorset.

Stratton Mountain is responsible for a couple of firsts: The concept for The Long Trail was hatched on the mountain by James P. Taylor in 1909, and it was the first major ski area to allow snowboarding. Jake Burton developed his first snowboard while living in nearby Manchester, and the mountain today is home to the US OPEN Snowboarding & Freestyle Skiing Championships which celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2012.

The area offers a wide range of things to do all year round. From skiing and riding in winter to hiking and golf in summer. Site seeing is a year round activity, and the town of Manchester offers plenty of that as well as a plethora of outlet stores and attractions, making it a popular destination. Along with all of that comes a range of lodging, rental, and real estate opportunities. The area is also a perfect destination for a dream Vermont wedding!
